Rotary provides books to students
SARANAC LAKE — This week more than 500 books will be delivered to Saranac Lake students, K-5, a gift from the Rotary Club of Saranac Lake.
The Rotary Club puts a book in the hands of every child every year to celebrate Read Across America and fulfill the club’s literacy initiative. This year, however, the COVID-19 outbreak and quarantine changed the club’s plans to distribute books in schools, read in classrooms and talk to young people about Rotary ideals.
2020欧洲杯体育投注官网 Dianne Tkach and Julie Connors of the Rotary Club of Saranac Lake had already identified and labeled the cartons of books and placed them in a warehouse at the high school, ready to be delivered. Tkach talked to Diane Fox, superintendent of the Saranac Lake Central School District, who arranged for the books to be delivered to principals and then to students.
“Literacy is an initiative we as a club are proud to put our name on,” Tkach said in a press release. “Having books in the home, encouraging reading and literacy at a young age, adults reading and being role models — these are all statistically proven to set the stage for an exciting learning curve as children from birth are introduced to books and reading. In addition, reading and lifelong learning play a large role in lowering poverty levels.”
